I've run into this as well - when mistreated by a man I don't know, the men who I thought cared, respond with a bit of a sneer and an attitude like, "see, it's dangerous out there, aren't you lucky that I don't sexually assault you? Aren't I just so much better than the other guys? See, you need my protection!"
