I tried a similar exercise. When I was feeling bad, I would try to think of one nice thing about each person I passed on the street, or each person I passed in public. It could be as simple as, "she has nice shoes," or as complex as, "That man's weary face is all the more beautiful for its weariness. I bet he's well-loved by his family."

It always put me in a better mood.
