I live in an RV, but I used to live in a van without a bathroom. I remember one morning duck-walking down the road, trying to hold in an insistent bowel movement (sorry, but there it is - the police wouldn't let us park and sleep next to the public restrooms), with a jug of my own urine under my arm (in a cute bag - I don't LOOK homeless)...and I thought to myself, "Damn. If I were any less physically and mentally able, if I had any kind of addiction occupying my mind, if I were angry at society (making me not quite as committed to being a "good citizen" whatever that is), there's no way I could pull this off. I'd be urinating and defecating in the street."

We don't have pipes to carry away our waste without a thought, nor do we have a garbage service, nor do we have running water. A good portion of our time is dedicated to doing things that house-dwellers don't even have to think about. We're not lazy, folks. If anything, it's you house-dwellers who....never mind.

Anyway, I'm not complaining - I've chosen this lifestyle (so far), but I don't think house-dwellers understand how much labor goes into being homeless (or embracing any unconventional living arrangement). Thank you for highlighting it here.
