Every time I see someone lamenting the high divorce rate and modern people's inability to stay in relationships, and saying that society will fall apart because of the breakdown of the nuclear family, I think they're just ignorant of the suffering of so many people (mostly women - let's face it, they paid the price, had less freedom, had less power than men) who stayed in unhappy marriages because of societal pressure.
Women paid the price for a stable society by handing their adult autonomy over to a man. Now that we're not willing to do it anymore, men are fretting. Hmph.
